Fundamental Rights in the Algorithmic Society

A doctoral workshop on AI, Labour Law and the EU Internal Market

This doctoral workshop is centred on the ongoing PhD research of Anne Joppe at Utrecht University, who has been a visiting PhD researcher at IE University Law School during this semester. Her research focuses on algorithmic management, meaning the use of AI and algorithms in the workplace by the employer, the protection of the worker’s rights to non-discrimination and data protection at work.

The seminar will explore how algorithmic systems and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping fundamental legal principles in both labour law and EU internal market law. The seminar is organized as an interdisciplinary workshop with contributions from Anne’s supervisors. Frans Pennings (Emeritus Professor of Labour Law and Social Security Law, Utrecht University) and Sybe de Vries (Professor of Public Economic Law, Utrecht University) will outline key principles in their respective fields that are challenged by AI. Anne will then present her preliminary findings on how these challenges manifest in both national (Dutch and Spanish) legal contexts and at the EU level. The goal is to provide a structured forum for discussion, feedback, and exchange around the preliminary findings.
