THE JEAN MONNET CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR LAW AND AUTOMATION

Welcome to Lawtomation!

We are witnessing an unyielding process of automation of contractual relationships, legal services, and administrative proceedings. Algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are employed to execute decisional tasks in workplaces and to enforce regulatory measures in many legal sectors. Automated decision-making is here to stay, affecting all aspects of our lives and challenging existing frameworks.

IE Law School is proud to announce the inaugural event of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for Law and Automation (“Lawtomation JMCoE”).

To launch the activities of the Centre, a multidisciplinary conference will be held on 29 and 30 September 2022. Its aim is to explore the relationship between law and automation, as well as the impact of algorithms and AI on constitutional values, human rights, workplace practices and legal remedies.

The two day conference will take place in a face-to-face format at the IE Tower in Madrid, Spain. Inspiring talks given by keynote speakers will be followed by thematic sessions (public law, private law, law and tech, labour law, law and policy, among others) and social events.

About

The Lawtomation JMCoE is a focal point of competence and knowledge on the impact of automation on the law that promotes excellence in teaching and research. It encourages synergies between legal experts and data scientists, in an open dialogue with policymakers, practitioners and the civil society at large. This cross-cutting endeavour is carried out cooperatively and involves multiple initiatives in the next three years.

The Centre focuses on three main research streams:

The Centre gathers the expertise of scholars from three schools of IE University: IE Law School, IE Business School and IE School of Science and Technology. It fosters interdisciplinary research beyond knowledge silos to address the multiple challenges that automation represents for law.

The Centre is co-financed by the European Commission, under the Erasmus+ Programme.
